I think the L.A times photographer Brian Walski who digitally manipulated the photo published the photo for an article dealing with the war in iraq should have been fired.

As a staff photographer who knows that doctoring photographs is against company policy he should have known better. A lot of people get their news solely from newspapers, and photos are in many peoples eyes second best only to seeing a scene yourself. To digitally manipulate a photo for a news article, especially one dealing with an issue as serious as the war in iraq is as bad as writing a fiction story and publishing it as news.

I think the reason Walski chose to edit the photo was to further push bias which the article for which it was published contains. It is never acceptable to edit an image for a news articles, and if photographers who do it get caught more often journalism may completely lose its integrity.

It is more acceptable to alter fashion photographs then news photographs because it is not altering peoples perception of facts. It is a widely known fact that almost all fashion photographs are edited in some way, and the sole purpose of most of them is to try and push a product, the purpose of news photographs is to provide people with evidence of the information published in a news article.

Kate winslett doesn’t like photoshop because the editors of magazines her picture is in use it to make her look different, whereas she likes the way she looks naturally and thinks photoshop gives people unrealistic expectations of her appearance, which she has no aim to resemble.

ykarsh_aeinstein1.jpgThis photo demonstrates the filling the frame rule of composition, einstein fills the frame, because hes all smrat and stuff.

jeffwall1.jpgThis photo demonstrates the rule of thirds, the man is in the bottom corner.

boat2.jpgThis picture demonstrates the use of lines, the houses run in a straight line giving this photo depth.

rs_repetition.jpgThis is an example of repetition, there are many computers looking very similar in a straight line.

rs_thirds.jpgThis photo demonstrates the rule of thirds

rs_leading.jpgThis photo demonstrates leading the eye, the stone wall in the foreground and the way the wooden structure is in the centre of the view instantly leads your eye to the wooden structure

rs_depth.jpgThis photo demonstrates depth and interest, the fire hydrant in the foreground, and the wooden thing in the middle create depth, and the fact that you can’t see where the hallway leads to creates interest.

rs_bend.jpgThis photo demonstrates the effect a bend has on an image, your eyes automaticly trace where it leads to.

rs_framefill.jpgThis photo fills the frame

.rs_framing.jpgThis photo is an example of framing the subject, the subject is framed by the metal bars.

rs_lines.jpgThis photo is a good example of the use of lines, the bars to the right which are in a line lead the eye to the end of the hallway.

I chose to do this AIT course because I wish to study a computer related course at uni next year (networking) and thought since I am pro at computers using this and information systems will get me an awesome TER. I work casual (mostly saturdays) at a supermarket, its crap, but makes money.

Although I would rate my computer skills as very good, I don’t know too much about digital editing, so this being a new thing to me I think it will be interesting, as information systems i’m basicly just bludging in because I know most of that already.

I am at canning college because I left school at the end of year 10 because I thought I could get a job easy enough without school, thats true… but they are crap jobs, so after working said crap jobs for 5 years I decided I’m coming back to study and get a job I would enjoy. So i’m planning on studying networking (or maybe IT, not sure which yet) at curtin uni next year.

I’m into metal and go to gigs regularly, drains my wallet when lots of international bands tour, but its worth it, Best shows i went to last year were black crusade (arch enemy and trivium, i left before machinehead) and gigantour (kicked ass, megadeth, lacuna coil, static x, and devildriver). Only international band ive seen this year is nightwish, but it was an awesome start to the year, one of the best gigs i’ve ever been to, also went and saw the support they had at there own show, voyager, awesome perth band, speaking of awesome perth bands check out karnivool if you don’t know em, kick ass. I’ve already spammed you with this enough, so bye.
